Why Army institute: Ranjit

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AMRITSAR, April 9: Suspended Akal Takht Jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh today strongly opposed the move to set up an Army institute in Anandpur Sahib and ridiculed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for making such a ``foolish'' demand from the Prime Minister.

He also announced to address Sikh sangat from Akal Takht on April 11 before leading a Khala march to Anandpur Sahib from here.

Addressing a press conference here Bhai Ranjit Singh said Khalsa tercentenary celebrations was an apt opportunity for the Akali Dal leaders to raise the demand of release of Sikh youth jailed under TADA. He said though TADA had been repealed long ago, the Sikh youth was being kept hostage illegally.

The suspended jathedar said that with the setting up of an Army institute in Anandpur Sahib, the religious environment of the holy city would be adversely affected. Moreover, he said such an institute would be of no use to the Punjabis as there is no dearth of Army cantonments in the state. He saw a conspiracy behind Centre's move to set up the institute in Anandpur Sahib.

Bhai Ranjit Singh blamed Badal for spoiling the historical Baisakhi festival by turning it into a cultural show and said that Sikhs would never forgive him (Badal), Barjinder Singh, editor, Ajit, and Finance Minister Kanwaljit Singh for denigrating the status of the Sikh Takhts.

He said Badal had made a ``tamasha'' of celebrations by forcing government employees to mark attendance at Anandpur Sahib and that hundreds of policemen were dressed in traditional Sikh attires with blue turban to show strength of the ruling group, he added.

He said he would liberate the Akal Takht from the clutches of ``mahants'' within few months with the help of the Sikh masses. He apprehended that the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) might obstruct him for going to the Akal Takht on April 11. He said in the latter case, which would be the most unfortunate moment in the Sikh history, he would not confront the SGPC physically.

Bhai Ranjit Singh said the Khalsa march being taken out on April 11 would be represented by all Sikh orgaisations from India and abroad. He said two other marches starting same day, from Talwandi Sabo and Delhi, would merge into this march at Morinda on April 12.

He added that Khalsa celebrations would continue with religious programmes on April 13 and 14 and that the stage would be made available for political speeches from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days. However, he clarified that no political agenda would be issued from the stage. He said senior dignitaries including former prime minister Chandra Shekhar and Kanshi Ram would address from their stage.
