HC seeks input son qualifications of MPs, MLAs

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 9: The Delhi High Court has sought the assistance of a senior government law officer to assist it in a public interest petition seeking a legislation to lay down higher qualifications for MPs and MLAs.

The three judge bench, of acting Chief Justice Devinder Gupta and Justices K.S. Gupta and S.K. Mahajan, today said they expected a senior law officer to assist the court on the issue, considering the importance of the matter.

The court was hearing a PIL by advocate Rakesh Kumar Singh, which said that the government should prescribe (and enforce) certain qualifications for legislators before the next general election, so that they could better understand various social and political issues.

The court agreed that there was a need for laying down certain qualifications for legislators, saying they were not expected to be illiterate. Taking a pro-active stand on the issue, the court commented that ``there might be no move if we do not move''.
