Digvijay lifts Chandigarh Open

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, April 9: Digvijay Singh carded two over par 74 to lift the title in the Bharat Petroleum Samarvir Sahi Chandigarh Open amateur golf championship, which concluded at the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

Digvijay, who led the field on all three days, began his round today on a slow note. He was two over on the front nine and played even par the back nine to finish two over for the day. ``I knew that I had a comfortable lead. So I took it easy on the back nine, '' said the Meerut based golfer after his victory.

Harmeet Kahlon, who also carded a two over par 74 for the day had a bad start. ``I just putted badly. I bogeyed the 1st, then left my putt for eagle on the 2nd hole short. On the 5th I did the same leaving my birdie putt short. On the 7th and 8th I missed putts for birdie,'' said Harmeet Kahlon after his round, who missed two-foot for birdie on the 11th and a three-foot for eagle on the 13th, which sealed his chances of winning the tournament.

Harmeet also had a double bogey on the 15th due to a pulled second shot that finished in the 4th fairway. From there he topped his lobbed wedge over the green, then came on and made two putt. Finishing with a bogey on the last he managed to finish second, ahead of Shiraz Kalra, who took the third spot in the meet. He was, however, satisfied with his performance. ``I hit the ball better than yesterday.'' Manav Das, who got the fifth position, however, returned the best card of the day. He shot four under 68. Earlier, Digvijay shot three under on the opening day. He also had level par rounds during the tournament.

Manav was five under after 15 holes, but he three putted the 16th to go back to four under. He missed a four-foot for birdie on 17th, and parred the 18th to finish with a 68.

Results: 1. Digvijay Singh (290), 2. Harmeet Kahlon (295), 3. Shiraz Kalra (297), 4. Anitya Chand (301), 5. Manav Dass (302), 6. Aman Behl, Shiv Kapoor and Vinod Kumar (307), 7. Sandeep Syal and Amit Luthra (308).
