Wheat crop destroyed in Dera Bassi blaze

DERA BASSI, April 11: The standing wheat crop on a 3-acre piece of land at Barana village near Lalru on Chandigarh-Ambala highway was destroyed today after a devastating fire engulfed the area. Short-circuiting is said to have caused the fire.Residents of Barana village gathered and brought the fire under control after one and half hours. This was the second major fire during the past week. Earlier, 6-acre of standing wheat crop was burnt to ashes in Malikpur village under Dera Bassi block.

No fire tender was able to reach the fire-site. Residents of both villages criticised the Dera Bassi authorities for its failure to provide fire tenders and demanded immediate compensation.Meanwhile, a case has been registered at the Lalru Police Station against PSEB officials of Lalru following filing of complaints by two residents Jang Singh and Labh Singh.

Gynae meet The two-day gynaecology conference concluded at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research at Chandigarh today. The conference ended today after two days of deliberations on endoscopic surgery.Today a question and answer session on endoscopy followed.

Visiting professor to the Department of Gynaecology PGI, A. Kurian Joseph, and endoscopy expert who runs a hospital in Chennai answered all the queries. Later, papers on topics concerning gynaecology were read by doctors, who had come from all over the region for the conference.
