Anand, Karpov play out a quick draw

AGENCIES
DOS HERMANAS, April 11: Vishwanathan Anand and Anatoly Karpov played out a quick draw on a day of dull and quick draws in the fourth round of the Dos Hermanas Tournament here last night.

This was the second draw for the top seed of the tournament Anand, who has lost the other two games so far. While Anand shares the ninth and tenth spot with Peter Svidler of Russia, who he meets next, Michael Adams continues to be the sole leader. Adams drew his fourth round game in 31 moves with Miguel Illescas.

In the shortest game of the tournament Viktor Korchnoi drew with Vladimir Kramnik after a mere 13 moves.

Anand and Karpov, who are due to meet in the Advanced Chess match in June, were engaged in Caro-Kann defence in which the Fide champion had black pieces. Anand offered the draw, which Karpov accepted.

After an English opening Judit Polgar offered a draw to Boris Gelfand, who still has one game left against Korchnoi to be played later. The draw came after 27 moves. The fifth round will see an interestingclash between Korchnoi and Karpov, who fought many battles of the world title back in late 1970s and early 80s. Korchnoi challenged Karpov twice for the world title, once in 1978 and then in 1981. Both times he lost. Karpov subsequently lost his title to Garry Kasparov in 1985.

Standings after Round 4: 1. Adams (3), Karpov, Illescas, Kramnik (2.5 each), 5. Topalov (2), Gelfand, Korchnoi, Polgar (1.5 each), Anand, Svidler (1 each).
