AICF plans to groom potential GMs

CHETAN KULKARNI
NAGPUR, APRIL 11: Better late than never. After a yawning gap of seven years the All India Chess Federation (AICF) has woken up to its responsibility of grooming potential chess wizards in the country. So, a month-long coaching camp will be organised by AICF, for the most promising 22 top-ranking boys and girls from the junior and sub-junior categories.

Revealing this information, AICF Secretary P T Ummer Koya, said that Russian coach Alexander Lysenko would impart training in the camp which would begin at Calicut from April 27.

The AICF is also trying to rope in a super Grandmaster to coach the Indian senior team. ``The Government has cleared the proposal and we are negotiating with Ian Elvest (Estonia), Alexander Kreshenkow of Poland, who was a quarterfinalist in the World Championship, and Andrei Taltov (Russia),'' Koya said.

Apart from the coming Commonwealth Chess Championship, starting at Bikaner from April 15, the AICF would organise the Asian Individual Championship and Asian Women Championshipat Udaipur from October 22 to November 3. An Asian Youth Championship for boys and girls would be organised at Ahmedabad from November 1 to 13. A Grandmasters tournament, which was scheduled to be held at Ahmedabad from October 19 to 29, would be now played at either Calcutta or Calicut on the same dates.

Koya, who is also a vice-president of Fide, said that a five-member men's team would be sent to China to take part in the Asian Team Championship to be played at Beijing in the month of October. Top-ranking players from the National `A' Chess Championship, which concluded here today, would be sent to Spain to participate in international tournaments slated to be held in June. He revealed that four Grandmasters have confirmed their participation in the Commonwealth Championship.
