NEW DELHI, April 12: They Call Him Dangerous was just a regular under-production TV soap, with filmstar Pran in the lead. But when the police landed up on the producer's doorsteps yesterday, reel life suddenly became horribly real. Crime branch officials say Girish Patel a.k.a Vinod Kumar Rajesh Aggarwal, 28, dreamt of making it big. He wanted to produce a serial with the biggest names in the business. But he had no money. In 1997, with a woman accomplice and fake share certificates he reportedly went about cheating people in Delhi and other cities. He collected enough money, left for Mumbai and ``started his dream''.Around the same time, a Preet Vihar businesswoman Neelam Bhatia filed a case of cheating in the local police station. She told the police that a young man identifying himself as Vinod Kumar Rajesh Aggarwal had sold her some share certificates. Accompanying him was a woman he introduced as his wife Asha.
The `couple' then furnished several documents to convince Bhatia that they were genuine. Bhatia was convinced. She bought share certificates worth Rs 20 lakh. A few days later, after she made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the couple, Bhatia realised she had been cheated.
The local police got few leads and the case was transferred to the Economic Offences Wing, who had been investigating the case for two years. Sub-Inspector N. K. Tyagi was the investigating officer. He and his team raided several places in and outside Delhi, questioned hundreds of people and then came to know of similar cases in other cities. ``We got a tip-off and arrested Asha from Mumbai. She told us that Girish was now producing a TV serial under the banner of Savita films,'' says DCP Karnal Singh. Yesterday, crime branch officials laid a trap near Mandi House and arrested Vinod. He has reportedly confessed to cheating several people, ``because he wanted to fulfill his dream''.
