PUNE, April 12: Deccan XI `A' have been declared winners of the Poona District Football Association (PDFA) I-Division title for the year 1998-99, after a decision was taken by the PDFA, on Sunday. The decision was reached after getting directives by the state body the Western India Football Association (WIFA), who in effect gave a clear signal to the PDFA League committee to take their own decision as per the rules. With Shivajians being eliminated from the Super-Four League - owing to the fielding of foreign players during the tournament -- the league automatically was reduced to a three team affair.
Deccan `A' won both their Super League ties against City Club and Roopali Sports Club and finished on top of the table with six points, while City Club who had a lone win against Roopali finished second with three points. Shivajians, by virtue of the PDFA's final verdict finished their campaign on a disparaging note. Being affixed with a blot on their reputation - all their ties have been declared null and void.
However, Shivajians, who were placed in Group-A were lucky to escape relegation in the garb of another team, Ex-Loyola Students Association (ELSA) failing to submit their entry - and instead faced demotion, according to information provided by Chetan Chavan, secretary PDFA.
Transfers: The PDFA will be effecting Inter club transfers at a later date. Forms for players' transfers can be availed from the PDFA secretary, Chetan Chavan, at 14, Laxmi Housing Society, Senapati Bapat Road, Pune 6. Tel No. 354745.
