Mohd Ali bags wrestling title

CHANDIGARH, April 12: Mohammad Ali (Pakistan) won the Bhai Himmat Singh title in the 69kg category (wrestling) of the Khalsa International Sports Festival at Anandpur Sahib today.

According to information received here, he ousted Bajinder Singh (Haryana) in the final bout to win a cash prize of Rs. one lakh.

Bouts in other categories (85kg, 76kg and 63kg) were also held.

Kulbir Singh of Chandigarh, however, lost to Badrath Singh (Punjab) in the 85kg category.

Meanwhile, Olympians Col Balbir Singh, Tarsem Singh, Baldev Singh were among those outstanding sportspersons who were honoured today. Others who were felicitated were Devi Dayal (Kabaddi), Manavjit Singh (shooting), Nisha Sharma (hockey), Parvesh Sharma (lifting), Makhan Singh (athletics) and Nirpjit Singh (volleyball).

League matches in circle kabaddi were also held.

Results: Wrestling: 85kg (World Khalsa Kesri): Rakesh (MP) bt Swaran Singh (HP); Harbinder Singh (Pun) bt Tejinder Singh (Canada); Badrath Singh (Pun) bt Kulbir Singh (Chandigarh).

76kg (Bhai Dharam Singh title): Ashok (UP) bt Dharam Singh (Delhi); Mohd Usman (Pakistan) bt Manjinder Singh (Canada); Rakesh (HP) bt Ranbir Singh (Pun); Joginder Singh (Haryana) bt Devinder Singh (England); Jang Bahadur Singh (USA) bt Ashok (UP).

63kg (Bhai Mohakamm Singh title): Umbir Singh (HP) bt Jatinder Singh (Haryana); Gurbir Singh (Pun) bt Bajinder Singh (Rajasthan).

69kg (Bhai Himmat Singh title): Final: Mohd Ali (Pakistan) bt Bajinder Singh (Haryana).

Tug of war: (semifinals): Haryana beat Khosa Randev 2-1 and Namdhari Club beat Punjab State Electricity Board 2-0.
