St Mary's start well

PUNE, April 12: St. Mary's High School got off to an impressive start outplaying Sardar Dastur High School's `C' 112-2 in the U-13 girls section on the opening day of the Pune district basketball tournament cum selection trials at the Deccan Gymkhana courts. For the winners, it was Apeksha Shah who top scored with 34 points and was well supported by Shweta Shirsat (16). While, Dastur `C' were no match to their rivals.

However, their seniors -- Dastur B -- fared no better. They also suffered a humiliating suffered from PYC Hindu Gymkhana, going down 7-32. Sai (8) and Rashmi (5) did the bulk of the scoring for PYC. In another encounter of the day, spikers from Bharati Nivas Society Club trounced St. Anne's High School 52-6, with Aditi and Ashwini scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively.

A total of 22 teams (15 girls and 7 boys teams) are in contention for honours in the U-13 section. Meanwhile, the U-18 age group selection trials will commence from April 16, with 24 teams in fray.

Teams selected from this meet will represent the Pune district in the State basketball tournament to be held in the first week of May in Vashi.
