Permission sought for slum relocation

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, April 13: Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria has sought the approval of the Standing Committee of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on a proposal to relocate 135 slum settlements falling under the Waghodia and Savad areas hindering the implementation of works under the town planning scheme.

Aloria has proposed to relocate about 90 slum settlements in Jayramnagar-Jeevannagar, Waghodia, and 45 in Ambedkarnagar, Savad, to the Ajwa Site and Service plot. The proposal has, however, evoked strong criticism from the Opposition which has threatened to lodge a complaint against the executing authority if it tried to relocate the slum-dwellers. In a letter to the Commissioner on Tuesday, Opposition leader Kanchanbhai Parmar said that the the slum-dwellers on Waghodia Road were adivasis who had been living there for the past 40 years.

The relocation of these slum settlements, he added, would tantamount to a violation of human rights he said, while describing the commissioner's move as ``illegal''.

Meanwhile, the decision on the appointment of the new Town Development Officer (Planning) will be finalised by the Standing Committee at its meeting on Saturday. Gopaldas Pranlal Shah, Vandana Rajnikant Munshi and Praful Vasantlal Bhavsar have been named for the posts.
