DUSU president's supporters trash exam centre

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 13: Supporters of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) president Jaivir Rana went on a rampage after he had an altercation with the invigilator during the Buddhist Studies masters examinations today. The VC's office has confirmed the incident. The invigilator demanded to check Rana's I-card and the exam entry slip after the latter was allegedly caught cheating. Rana's supporters broke window panes, furniture and parked vehicles inside the examination branch. They also damaged the window panes of passing vehicles. The police took more than an hour to bring the situation under control.

Vice Chancellor Prof V.R. Mehta said: ``There is no charge of cheating against Rana. However, it is a fact that Rana and his supporters beat up karamcharis and broke furniture inside the examination branch.'' An enquiry committee has been set up to probe the matter. The committee comprises two members Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences and director of Delhi School of Economics Prof K. Sundaram and Prof R.R. Singh from the Delhi School of Social Work. The members will decide whether to debar Rana from taking his examinations and for how long. Director (South Campus) Prof Abhai Mansingh said: ``Under ordinary circumstances, there would have been no need to set up a committee. However, this is a special case and the student concerned may accuse that he is being victimised on political grounds as he holds a political office.''
