APRIL 13: Nagsen Etambe (BoI) and P Nirmala (LIC) have been top-seeded in the Open and women's singles, respectively, of the fourth Mayor Cup carrom tournament, which begins on April 15 at the Mumbai Mahanagar Palika Kreeda Bhavan, CST, Azad maidan.Open singles: 1 Nagsen Etambe (BoI), 2 Narsingrao Sakar (BSES), 3 Mahendra Tambe (Bank of Maha.) and 4 Chakor Salve (MM Corp).
Women's singles: 1 P Nirmala (LIC), 2 Anupama Kedar (BoI), 3 Nalini Bolinjkar (PM Bath) and 4 Monaz Tanttra (Petit).
Team event: 1 Income-Tax, 2 Boricha SC, 3 Ganesh CC and 4 Bank of Maharashtra.
A Grand success
The annual Martell Grand National is touted as the world's greatest steeplechase. Held at Aintree, near Liverpool (England) it came closer home for the city race-goers this year with it's live telecast at the Mahalakshmi Race Course on Sunday, April 10.
Though the area looked deserted at the beginning of the event, with the fall of darkness and the two 35 mm screens on which the race wasbeing shown lighting up crowds started pouring in.
Though only two races were to be telecast, as many as 800 race enthusiasts turned up for the event. The simulcast was one of its first kind in the country.
Khalsa tourney today
Khalsa Gymkhana will conduct the fourth Guru Nanak Devji hockey tournament at the Khalsa College Gymkhana ground from April 14 to 22. The top 18 teams from Mumbai are participating in the knock-out tourney. Central Railway, Tatas, Maharashtra State Police, Indian Navy, have been given a direct entry to the quarter-finals. The winners will receive a cash prize of Rs 11,000 while the runners-up will get Rs 7,000.
Five-a-side Rink football
The Rocky Sports Club will be conducting a 5-a-side Rink football tournament at the Cooperage east-side stand from April 25 to 30. Entries close on April 20.
