Love makes Bangla school close down
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
DHAKA, APRIL 14: Suspected fundamentalists in Bangladesh's northern Nilphamari district forced the closure of a primary school, pronouncing a fatwa against one of its teachers and demanding that she be terminated from service for contracting marriage after a secret love affair. The episode has left the school's 180 students stranded, the daily Banglabazar Patrika said today. The daily said the victim, Parul (22), incurred the wrath of the fundamentalists when she married her boyfriend during the recent Id-ul-Zuha festival holidays. When the Anand Niketan Primary School, run by a social organisation, reopened last Saturday, the hardliners, at the behest of a leader of a local fundamentalist group, stormed into the premises and forced Parul out. They then issued a fatwa against her. ``How can a teacher who had a love marriage impart education to students?'' they fumed. The group had the school locked shut on Monday after the authorities refused to sack Parul, the daily said.Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
