NEW DELHI, April 14: An hour after the Bangkok-bound Thai Airways flight was air-borne, the police control room received a call. The caller informed them that there was a bomb on the Thai flight. The flight was promptly called back to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. What followed was a thorough search of the aircraft and a six hour ordeal for the passengers.According to the police, the hoax call was made from a public telephone booth and has not yet been traced.
Flight TG-316 took-off from IGI at 12 a.m. and was back on the tarmac around one in the morning. The minute the aircraft touched ground, the stand-by staff took over.
Passengers were asked to vacate the aircraft, all the baggage was unloaded and sniffer dogs were got on board. The bomb disposal squad then minutely went through the entire aircraft, checking everything from the baggage cabin to the air-conditioning ducts. After an hour long hunt for the device, the police finally gave the flight an all clear signal.
But passengers had to wait a while longer before they could board the flight again. They had to go through another security check and identify their baggage again before it was re-loaded.
The Air Traffic Control finally gave the flight clearance for departure again after the bomb disposal squad had certified that there was no bomb on the craft and all other formalities had been completed.
