The committee in its earlier meetings held in February and March had recommended massive fee hikes ranging from 30 per cent to more than 10-fold. Following the proposals, various students organisations including the Haryana Students Association (HSA), the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) had launched a joint agitation and hunger strike in protest.

The PU syndicate in its meeting on March 17 had decided that five more members be added to the existing 18-member committee, and the issue be re-examined. The names of syndics Rajinder Deepa, Ashok Goyal, Rajinder Bhandari, Anmol Rattan Sidhu and S.S. Hundal were added. The committee will meet on April 24, sources said.
