Workshop for parents of mentally retarded children from today

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, April 14: A two-day workshop for parents of mentally retarded children is being organised by the Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College Sector 32 from April 15.

The workshop being organised at Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children, Sector 32, follows the detailed check up of mentally retarded children at a Health Mela held recently. Dr B.S.Chavan, professor and Head of Psychiatry Department Sector 32 says: ``it was discovered at the Health Mela that approximately 90 per cent children had associated medical problems and 60 to 70 per cent have associated learing and behavioural problems.''

It was also found that parents of these children were under major psychological stress as they found themselves incompetent in handling their problems. The workshop aims at training the parents to cope with the behavioural problems encountered by the children, said Chavan.

The workshop will be inaugurated by Dr Kiran Bedi, Inspector General of Police and will have Professor V.K.Kak, Director Principal GMCH Sector 32 as guest of honour.

PGI resident docs concerned over hostel thefts
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) expressed concern over the inadequate security at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research hostels.

In a general body meeting of the Association, president of Association of Resident Doctors Dr Prasad discussed the burglary in five rooms on April 10. ``Two stereo CD players worth Rs 55,000, an electronic diary, cash worth Rs 10,000 and an imported telephone have been stolen from the resident doctor's rooms,'' said Prasad. Following their complaint Director Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research assured them that the construction of the compound wall would be completed soon. But the issue of providing grills in all rooms was still pending with the administration, say doctors.

Prasad said: ``The doctors had also met Inspector General of Police Kiran Bedi, who visited the hostel and has deputed two IPS officers to look into the matter''.
