Semi-final stage set

Press Trust of India
Gandhidham, April 14: Top seed Chetan Baboor, fifth seed Deepak Thukral, third seed Arup Basak and second seed S Raman entered the semi-finals of the Rs 1.33 lakh India Top 12 prize money table tennis tournament here today.

In the women's section Indian Oil Corporation's NR Indu, BPCL's MS Mythili, and Bengal girls Poulomi Ghatak and Mouma Das entered the semi-finals.

Fifth seed Deepak Thukral of Dena Bank caused the only upset in the men's section when he defeated fourth seed Arjun Dutta of IOC.

Deepak raised his game to greater heights with his deft returns, deadly smashes and variation in his services that caught Dutta on the wrong foot many a times.

But the foxy Dutta fully stretched him. He won two games but the writing was clear of the wall as Deepak emerged with a 21-13, 14-21, 16-21, 21-15, 21-17 win.

In the other quarter-finals, top seed Chetan Baboor, fresh from his triumphs in Teheran and Mumbai, took some time to find his rythm against eighth seed Bhushan Thakur of Railways.

The vastlyexperienced Baboor varied his pace so subtly that Thakur was Left clueless. Thakur put his best effort to contain Baboor but it was in vain.

In the other match, third seed Arup Basak of Hindustan Petroleum cantered home to an easy 21-12, 21-14, 21-12, win against Nupur Santra of Railways.

Second seed S Raman of IOC also made short work of Subhojit Saha with a straight 21-11, 21-18, 22-20 win.

In the women's section, fifth seed Mythili of BPCL shot out fourth seed Kasturi Chakraborty of Railways 22-20, 21-15, 21-10.
