Das downs Bahadur

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, APRIL 14: After the opening day's dour fare, the 48th Senior Inter-Services boxing championships came alive today with some keen bouts, two of which called for intervention by the referee.

No quarter was given nor asked for at the Army School of Physical Training. Telling punches and blows were executed and none of the pugilists in action were in any mood to give in easily.

Take the second bout of the day for instance. Azaz Alam (Army Green), the bronze medallist at the 1994 Indo-Thai Boxing championship and Rozam Lianan of the Air Force set the tone with some lively action.

The former pounded away to force referee Hardev Singh to stop the fight and spare Lianan, a mere 145 seconds into the fly weight duel.

Later, in light welter section, Hari Das Singh of Air Force sent Dan Bahadur crashing to the mat in the third round, bringing stretcher bearers into attendance. At the professional level, the verdict would have been a `knock-out' but here, Bahadur having suffered a head injury, the outcomewas adjudged as Referee Stops Contest (RSC).

Hari Das, at the receiving end for the first two rounds of the bout, came good with a singular blow to seal the contest. A left hook sent Bahadur sprawling unconscious and doctors Lt Col AK Mehta and major Roy scrambling to render the fallen boxer aid.
