Krajicek scores, Agassi pulls out

AGENCIES
TOKYO, APRIL 14: Top seed Richard Krajicek advanced to the third round of the Japan Open tennis tournament today when his Dutch compatriot John Van Lottum was forced out of the match through injury. Van Lottum suffered a neck strain when Krajicek was 3-1 up.

Krajicek, who received a first-round bye, will take on 16th seed David Prinosil in the third round after the German breezed past Cecil Mamiit of the United States 6-2, 6-3.

The $ 895,000 tournament lost much of the star value when popular Americans Andre Agassi and Michael Chang went out of the event.

Second seed Agassi hurt his right shoulder when he defeated Becker in the rain-delayed Hong Kong Open final on Monday.

Agassi arrived in Tokyo yesterday and practised on the hardcourt here, but decided to pull out today.

The 1989 French Open champion Chang, who had to stave off one match-point yesterday, fell victim to an array of attacking forehands from Jens Knippschild of Germany as he went down 3-6, 4-6 in the second round.

Sampras pullsout
BARCELONA: Pete Sampras was forced out of the Barcelona Open today after aggravating a back injury. Sampras strained a muscle in his lower back while playing a low-key doubles match partnered by Britain's Tim Henman.

Earlier, fourth seed Alex Corretja tumbled out of the tournament last evening, losing 7-6, 6-3 in the second round to Morocco's Younes el Aynaoui.

Spanish ninth seed Albert Costa scored a smooth 6-3, 6-2 first round win over Italy's Andrea Gaudenzi. In a late match Yevgeny Kafelnikov too exited going down 2-6, 4-6 to Argentine Franco Squillari.
