Police to use Class IV staff

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, April 15: City police began a special drive this morning to get underage drivers off the road. To fully carry out this drive, it has been decided to make use of Class IV staff in city schools; they will be inducted as Home Guards for the purpose.

Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Balbir Singh termed the drive a success, noting that very few students were seen riding two-wheelers or driving cars during the day.

On the first day of the drive police merely warned the underage drivers; from tomorrow they will be challaned. However, police did challan motorists for other offences near the schools, including driving without helmets.

Police also enforced the one-way traffic at three points in the city (sectors 26, 9 and 32) where school traffic is heavy.

Meanwhile, the Police Department has decided to recruit chowkidars and Class IV employees in various schools as Home Guards for ensuring that the drive carries on. A senior police official told Newsline: "This is being done to ensure that the drive is not abated after some time."

Before 8 a.m., the police were deployed in full strength around the schools. There were very few students who drove in, with most of them getting dropped in. Some reverted to using mopeds and low-horse-power scooters which are allowed for the 16-plus under the Motor Vehicles Act provided they have the license. Some also came on cycles.

The drive dismayed students. "I come from Panchkula and also have to go for tuitions," said Priyanka, a student of Sector 16 Government Senior Secondary School. She said she would buy a Sunny although she wondered why she could ride a moped or Sunny and not a Kinetic Honda.

The cops were also seen urging students to cycle to school but this found favour with few students. "I'll better have my parents drop me," said Shauriya, a plus two student.
