New PCC chief arrives amid flurry of asset declarations

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 15: Congress MLA from Kalkaji Subhash Chopra took over as president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) amid celebrations at Talkatora Road today.

Many senior leaders grabbed the opportunity to `declare' their assets, which is mandatory under the Congress' code of conduct for MLAs. Only eight of the 53 MLAs elected in Delhi have declared their assets yet. Chopra thanked party president Sonia Gandhi for reposing faith in him and said, ``I want to assure her that the only slogan emerging from DPCC would be that in praise of Sonia.'' He was greeted by out-going DPCC chief and Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.

Subhash came to the point quickly. ``I take this opportunity to clear the air. I and Dikshit share a good relationship and I would not have been able to do anything in Delhi without her support,'' he said.

``I am also assuring her that everything I do, I will do with her assurance,'' he said, then added, ``And also with the assurance of AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress MP Meira Kumar, and veteran leader R.K. Dhawan present here.''

Then he tried setting an agenda. ``Dikshit solved the problem of price rise within 15 days of coming to power in Delhi. Now we have to solve the problem of law and order,'' he said.

``I do not want office-bearers who are on paper. I want them on the road,'' he said.

Dikshit smugly stuck to her simple yet comprehensive achievement, to have quelled factionalism in the party. In her speech, therefore, she pointed out candidly, ``The unity we have seen in the last one year has to stay. That is the only way we will pay our gratitude to Sonia Gandhi.''

R.K. Dhawan had a different point of view. ``Subhash is not a new face. Everyone knows him and he knows all the problems. He will solve them.'' Packed on the small stage, he was standing close to Dikshit who was once blamed for being a fresh face trying to grapple with Delhi politics.
