Fire Service Week: Two fires on Day Two
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 15: Two fires were reported late last night and early this morning in Welcome Colony and Gokulpuri. While the damage was extensive, there were no casualties reported.Around 85 jhuggis were gutted after a fire broke out at around 11.30 p.m. near the Seelampur railway line in Welcome Colony. Also destroyed were some kiosks where belts, suitcases and other articles used to be sold. Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said that the fire was brought under control in two hours. Another fire broke out at around 3 a.m. in a thread factory in Gokulpuri. The factory was gutted and residents living nearby complained that despite repeated calls to DFS, the first fire engine arrived after two hours. The Loss Prevention Association of India has issued precautions to be kept in mind to prevent fires or during fires:
Do not allow children to play in the kitchen or leave them alone in the house. If you suspect that your LPG stove is leaking, immediately close the cylinder valve, open the windows and call the agency.Do not overcook in a pressure cooker as it may explode. If oil in a pan catches fire, immediately put off the stove and cover the pan. Never pour water on it.Carefully extinguish all cigarettes. The tip of a cigarette can generate as much heat as 1,000 degrees Celsius, which can easily ignite organic matter.Plug only one appliance in one socket. Overloading the electric circuit can start a fire. Switch off the mains before attempting to fight any electric fire.If your clothes catch fire, do not run. Roll on the ground instead. In case of burns, pour water on the affected area until the pain subsides. Do not apply any oil or ointment unless recommended by a doctor. In case of fire in buildings, remember that fire travels upward very fast. Try and escape to the lower floors and use the stairs and not the elevator.Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
