Minister grilled for `protecting' financial firm owner

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, APRIL 15: Cutting across party lines, Congress as well as BJP members today severely grilled Minister of State for Home Prabhakar More for allegedly protecting Uday Acharya, owner of the firm C U Marketing Company, involved in several financial irregularities.

BJP member Kirit Somaiyya, who had given a calling attention notice on the alleged failure of the alliance government to book him, said that the reply to his notice was misleading and specific queries raised by him have not been replied at all.

Somaiyya was supported by Chandrakanta Goel, Jayashri Nayak, Mohan Raichura, Abhiram Singh of the BJP and Narsaiyya Adam (CPM), Leader of Opposition Madhukar Pichad, Laxman Dhoble, R R Patil and Jayant Patil.

Somaiyya alleged that though he lodged a record number of 40 complaints against the firm, no action was taken by the police. ``Police registered an offence against him only after Acharya moved an application for anticipatory bail,'' Somaiyya pointed out.

Pichad said the alliance governmentshould immediately arrest Acharya, seize his property and impound his passport since it was question of 40,000 investors, who have invested Rs 400 crore in a firm floated by Acharya.

The leader of Opposition expressed shock and surprise over the failure of the government to initiate stringent action against Acharya. ``As per official records of the government, Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde had convened a special meeting in July 1998 to decide the course of action against the firms set up by Acharya. In the said meeting, specific instructions were given to the law enforcing agencies. However, even till today, no action has been taken against Acharya or his firms,'' Pichad alleged.

While Abhiram Singh asked the government to seize his property, CPM's Narsaiyya Adam demanded Acharya's arrest under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act.

Intervening during the reply to the calling attention notice, Chief Minister Narayan Rane said his government will take all possible steps to bookAcharya. ``We will ensure that the anticipatory bail granted to him is cancelled and Acharya is arrested by the police. If the bail is not cancelled, we will appeal against the order,'' Rane assured the House.

Earlier, More admitted that there was delay on the part of the government to take action against Acharya. ``We were told by the Chief Police Prosecutor that the activities of C U Marketing do not amount to cheating, therefore an offence was not registered against him. However, following Reserve Bank of India's intervention, an offence was registered against him as well as the firm,'' More said.

More also informed the House if police protection has been given to Acharya, the same will be withdrawn forthwith.
