CHANDIGARH, April 16: The Haemophiliac Welfare Society, Chandigarh, has embarked upon a campaign to create awareness among the people about hemophilia to observe World Haemophilia Day, which falls on Saturday. Haemophilia is a disease resulting from deficiency of blood clotting factor in human beings.According to Dr B. K. Chabbra, president of the society, posters and pamphlets carrying information about the disease will be distributed and pasted at various hospitals and public places in the city and its satellite towns of Panchkula and Mohali.
The society will also hold seminars and workshops to sensitise the common man to the physical and emotional trauma the haemophiliac and his family has to undergo, and to the means through which he can help mitigate their suffering. The need for holding more blood camps will also be emphasised during these interactions as free availability of blood is vital to the survival and well-being of the hemophiliac, Dr Chabbra said. These decisions were taken at a meeting of the Haemophiliac Welfare Society today.
The executive members of the society also stressed the need to create a separate unit to treat hemophiliacs at the PGI as they felt the patients suffering from this disease could only be handled by the doctors having expert knowledge about the disease. The society appealed to the PGI to prepare FFP (fresh frozen plasma) and Cryo in sufficient quantity to meet the requirement of the patients.
