Woman set afire

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 16: A 25-year-old housewife was set afire, allegedly by her mother-in-law, on Thursday. Archana was rushed to the LNJP Hospital with 80 per cent burns. Her condition is critical. The incident took place at their 85, Pal Chowk house in Mandawali, east Delhi. Archana, an M.Com student, and Bhupinder, who recently finished his M.Com and is presently unemployed, got married in June 1998. They don't have any children.

They lived on the ground floor, while Bhupinder's parents, his brother and sister-in-law and their children lived on the first floor. Archana's mother-in-law Mahendri Devi allegedly called her upstairs on Thursday morning, doused her with kerosene and lit a match. At the time of the incident, Archana's sister-in-law had gone to drop her children to school. In her statement to the police, Archana has said that Mahendri Devi would continuously harass her for Rs 1 lakh as dowry. She has not named anyone else.
