Yoga project for the millenium

The Yoga Institute, Santacruz has organised a `Yoga for the next millennium, better Indians, better humans' project on April 27. The project aims at giving intensive training programme for yoga sadhaks and eventually, to invite the general public who are interested in spiritual selfless life. It will be held on April 27 for the core group of sadhaks from 6 pm 8 pm. The programme coincides with the 70th birthday of Dr Jaya Dev Yogendra, director of the institute.

Cancer screening unit at Lilavati

Lilavati Hospital will inaugurate a cancer screening and awareness clinic exclusively for women on April 27. The hospital will offer the first 100 women who register at the clinic a free check-up and tests, including PAP smear and mammography. The clinic will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 am to 1 pm. Gynaecologists Dr Kiran Coelho and Dr Nandita Palshetkar will be available for consultation during this period.

In India it is estimatedthat one out of every 50 women develop breast cancer by the age of 60, while cervical cancer is the number one killer accounting for 50,000 deaths and one lakh new cases every year. However over 70 per cent patients seek medical advice only in the advanced stages of cancer. Invasive cervical and breast cancer can be detected in its early stage and can be treated effectively, said Dr Coelho.

New Chief of Staff

Rear Admiral Jagjit Singh Bedi AVSM VSM took over as Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command on Monday at the command headquarters. He was formerly Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (policy and plans) at naval headquarters, New Delhi.

Rear Admiral Bedi has held various operational, staff and training appointments. His sea commands include ships like INS Atul, Bedi, Udaygiri, Ranvir and the aircraft carrier Viraat. He has been officer-in-charge Naval Signal School andcommanding officer of the naval academy.

Summer camps for children
The Sanskriti Academy of Fine Arts, Thane, will conduct two camps for children of the age groups 8-12 and 13-18. The camp for juniors from April 24 includes workshops in music, folk dance, puppetry, magic and art. The camp for seniors from May 2 includes workshops in music, drama, photography, pottery and art. Earth Day programme
On April 22, celebrated as Earth Day, the Bombay Natural History Society has arranged a panel discussion `Environmental Conservation - Present and Future'. Experts from different fields have been invited to answer and discuss issues related to environment and wildlife, including Bittu Sahgal, Dr B F Chhapgar, Dr S B Chaphekar, J C Damel and Dr A H Rahmani. The programme will be held at 6.30 pm at Hornbill House, opposite Regal. Participation is open to all.
