Judge refuses to head panel on Shaktimaan

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, APRIL 20: The Delhi High Court was today informed that Justice Leila Seth (retired) had refused to head a committee appointed by the court to examine the "adverse" effects of television serial Shaktimaan on children.

Government counsel H S Phoolka told Justice M K Sharma that Justice Seth had expressed her inability to head the panel due to her ``preoccupation''.

The court had appointed a three-member committee under Justice Seth last month after Shaktimaan producer, director and actor Mukesh Khanna, moved the court to challenge Doordarshan's notification terminating the telecast of the serial.

The other members of the panel are National Commission for Women chairperson Vibha Parthasarathy and journalist Dilip Padgaonkar.

The court adjourned hearing to July 22 after Khanna's counsel Arun Jaitley suggested some new names to head the panel.

The court had stayed the termination order till the panel submits its report and permitted telecast of the serial in a "restrained" form.DD had justified the termination order on the ground that it had received several reports about the "ill effect" of the serial on children.

According to the complaints annexed with the affidavit by DD, children tried to imitate Shaktimaan, who is shown to have supernatural powers.
