Surat drivers on strike
Surat: Transportation was thrown out of gear today with over 30,000 drivers withdrawing their autorickshaws indefinitely over ``police high-handedness and atrocities.'' As police enforced the meter system on Monday evening, unions issued the call for an idenfinite strike in the morning. Some groups stoned ST buses at Nehru bridge, Adajan Patia and GIDC Pandesara and a police van in the afternoon, police said, adding five drivers were arrested and two autorickshaws seized.3 die in mishap
Two women and a minor girl were killed in an accident on the Mittana Chattar Road near Tankara on Tuesday. Police said the three died when their truck (GTF 8276) overturned. The deceased were yet to be identified.
Three held
Police have arrested three persons in connection with constable Mehulbhai Chavda's murder in Majothianagar on April 18. They are Qadir Gagji, the prime accused, his sister Hanifa and Dhiru alias Bacchu. Another accused, Jaggu Dev Sinh, was absconding.
Bus service
Bhuj: The first city bus service was inaugurated by State Industries and Tourism Minister Suresh Mehta on Sunday. The municipality which is to run the service has acquired two new buses at a total cost of Rs 13.86 lakh.
Meet on water
Bharatiya Kisan Sangh national president K L Jadav will hold a meeting with the Narmada Nigam Sarovar Limited chairman and other officials on April 21 over the issue of Narmada water for the border district. Sangh Kutch unit president Veljibhai Bhudia said that Jadav had advocated more Narmada water for the drought-hit district.
