Water: Mayor feels let down

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
RAJKOT, April 20: Mayor Govind Solanki lambasted the senior leaders of his own BJP at the general board meeting of the Rajkot Municapal Corporation today for not supporting him when the government decided to release extra water from Bhadar dam for irrigation.

Solanki said the water crisis being faced by the RMC was because of this decision. Pointing at state BJP secretary Vijay Rupani, former mayor Uday Kangad and standing committee chairman Dhansukh Bhandhari, he said if these leaders had supported him at that time the crisis this year could have been averted. Solanki said irrigation officials had misled the RMC while giving the level of silting of 1987 and the Government did not show interst in long-term solutions. The issue dominated the meeting for nearly one-and-hour. BJP councillors tried to switch over to the next item on the agenda, but opposition members prevented them.

Commissioner Raj Gopal said he was not sure about the water cut and acutal supply to the city depended on how much water evaporated in transit.

Raising a point over the condition of civic schools, councillor Vijay Desani said antisocials were carrying out activities in school buildings in the absence of security, while toilets at public school were in a shambles.

The board approved some 54 resolutions the standing committee had cleared earlier.
