Gondal MLA calls off fast

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
RAJKOT, April 20: Gondal BJP MLA Jayrajsinh Jadeja called off his fast-unto-death after the State government agreed to transfer police inspector Bachubhai Ninama and hold a magisterial inquiry against Gondal ASP Pandiya Raj Kumar for his alleged high-handedness.

However, DSP Satish Sharma said that no magisterial inquiry has been ordered against Raj Kumar but confirmed that inspector Ninama has been transferred.

Jadeja said that Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel had assured him over the telephone that Home Minister Haren Pandya will look into the matter and take action. Pandya said that he has asked district collector P V Trivedi to prepare the order. "The police inspector has been transferred. As for the ASP, we have to inquire into it before any action is taken." Some BJP leaders had sat on a fast under leadership of MLA Jayrajsinh Jadeja in protest against what they called `police danda raj' in Gondal. There were several confrontations between Jadeja and police and recently business in Gondal Marketing Yard came to a standstill following a verbal altercation between Jadeja and ASP Kumar.

The police continue to view the MLA as an accused in some criminal cases and accused him of interfering in enforcement of law and order in the area.

BJP leaders alleged high handedness of police and atrocities on innocent villagers of the taluka. They had even complained to Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel and State Home Minister Haren Pandya against these police officers.

Last week Jadeja, along with chairman of Nagrik Bank Jayantilal Dhol, agriculture produce market board chairman Ramesh Dhaduk, chairman of Gondal taluka sarpanch Sankalan committee Kanaksinh Jadeja, Kishor Adipara and municipal president Prithvisinh Jadeja started an agitation and later went on a hunger strike from Sunday. District collector P V Trivedi and rural DSP Satish Sharma had tried unsuccessfully to strike a compromise.
