Freedom of Expression

Nisha Jhamwal
When Geeta Raheja decided to open an art gallery in the suburbs she was obviously not thinking of just the quintessential space exhibiting art and sculpture, but an interactive and synergistic collage of the arts where one could browse through art books, conduct poetry/play readings and organise art workshops. This is exactly what she has done. Three months since her The Fine Art Company (FAC) opened, she has hosted a poetry reading by Santosh Kshirsagar and talks by Sasha Altaf and Girish Shahani.

This week, the FAC is host to a new series of workshops -- by Hema and Chintan Upadhyay. Interestingly, Chintan's first solo art show in Mumbai was held in these premises. Now he is staying on to conduct workshops on mask making, enamel jewellery and print-making (both linocut and calligraphy). The qualification: For children of five years and above!

A workshop for kids only? No, it's for people of all ages -- five onward. And mothers, fathers, daughters are all trouping in to be part of this hands-on learningprocess. An idea inspired by the works of art painted by children from the Mobile Creche hanging on the walls of the upper level of the gallery. "Parents wanted to know why their kids didn't paint like that -- without predigested, imposed ideas. Why is it if you paint an elephant it has to be grey?" says Geeta.

As a musician -- she plays the guitar -- Geeta found she had too little time to be with her music. She decided to set up a place where art lovers could meet and be surrounded by painting, music and poetry. "All arts must flow into each other, and if you have an aesthetic sense you enjoy all the arts, be it the visual arts, dance or theatre." Which is why FAC is a place where people can walk in and look at art without the feeling that they have to buy a piece. "I would love for people to think of it like a Jehangir on this side of town." In time, they may just. Next year, Geeta plans to have Manu Parekh conduct a workshop.
