Situated in a quiet part of Chandigarh, the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA), Sector 10, escapes notice. However, if you want your child to follow in the footsteps of Leander Paes, or just play tennis well, this is where he should spend the coming summer. At present, the academy has 300 trainees, between 7 and 11 years of age. However, you cannot just walk in and register your child with this academy, that specialises in coaching juniors. They keep a waiting list where you can go and register your child.
Only children under the age of 18 are coached, so every year new youngsters, some only seven years old, are recruited. Whenever there are dropouts, tennis enthusiasts, who have already registered are called for a physical fitness test and chosen according to the requirement and merit.
They have a good facility of coaches, as well as two fitness specialists, one who teaches yoga and the other a physiotherapist. Every evening the children come and warm up by running around the court. After they have played tennis, they go to their fitness specialists, who give them drills to follow.
The idea behind the CLTA's coaching scheme is to give results. It is not for social recreation but to cultivate competitive talent. Kanwaljeet Singh, director of the coaching programme at the CLTA, says: ``This is the best centre for grooming budding tennis players.''
Children here play in three groups. The match play group, which is the most advanced, arrives at 3.30 p.m and plays till 5. Then the intermediate group takes over for an hour and finally, the beginners are given a chance to hone their talent from 6 to 7 p.m. So if you have an inclination for this game, this is the place to be in. Who knows, you might be our answer to Pete Sampras.
