Maharashtra Bridge team champs

MUMBAI, APRIL 20: The Maharashtra team comprising RA Agarwal, Arvind Vaidya, Dr Jagannathan, Gautam Biswas and Dipak Pradhan, defeated Andhra Pradesh by 4 IMPs to bag the Gurudatta Trophy, the symbol of supremacy in National bridge which concluded recently at Mount Abu, according to a release.

Maharashtra, trailing by 43 IMPs after 32 boards, fought back splendidly in the 3rd segment amassing 58 IMPs difference to change the complexion of the final completely and claim the title after a gap of five years.

In the pairs event final for the Agarwala Trophy, Maharashtra's Dr Prakash Paranjpe and Vivek Bhand beat Sanjay Damle-Rajeev Gulvani, also of Maharashtra.

Sadly, the Bridge Federation of India, the apex body didn't have the trophies to present and the champions had to return home without a trophy or a replica.

BMC A retain title

Brihan Mumbai Mahanagar Palika A retained the crown when they beat Boricha Sports Club 2-1 in the team final of the 4th Mayor Cup carrom tournament at the BMCGymkhana, Azad maidan, today.

Results:

Final: BMC A bt Boricha Sports Club 2-1: (Shamji Padaya bt Dilip Sosa 25-9 25-15; Manu Baria lost to Amit Mohite 12-25 25-16 6-25; Chakor Salve bt Dinesh Boricha 25-11 7-25 25-18).

Third place: BEST A bt Bank of India A 2-1: (Babulal Shrimal bt Sanjay Nagaokar 25-18, 25-9; Allwyn D'Souza bt Dinesh Gide 25-5 11-25 25-14; Dilip Sandge lost to Nagsen Etambe 13-25 14-25).

Shah moves up

Ritesh Shah (35), who had a break of 32, defeated C Kyani (45) 65-105, 97-86, 109-69, in a hard-fought first-round tie of the Sushil R Ruia Cup snooker tournament, sponsored by Selvel and Consultant, at the Matharpacady Club, Mazgaon, today.

First-round: DR Sharma (50) bt MR Deokar (60) 103-82, 113-106; V Madan (55) bt A Ferrao (60) 115-99, 125-84; V Gehani (50) bt R Jaisingh (60) 118-83, 93-83.
