Gurdial Singh breaks two national records

CHANDIGARH, April 20: The Chandigarh veterans athletes gave outstanding performance in the just concluded National Veterans athletics meet held at New Delhi from April 16 to 18. The Chandigarh contingent won the overall second position in the meet. The overall title went to Tamil Nadu.

According to information received here, Dharamvir Sharma (plus 80 category), Ramesh Chander (plus 45) and Gurdial Singh Saini gave excellent performance in their respective events in the meet.

Dharamvir got three gold medals. His first two came in the track events (100m and 200m). He also got first position in the long jump event.

Ramesh Chander also bagged three gold medals. He was victorious in 5,000 and 10,000 metres and 1,500-metre.

Gurdial Singh Saini also hogged the lime light as he walked away with two new meet marks in the meet. He clocked 25 minutes 52.00 seconds to win the gold medal in the 5 km walk to erase the old meet record of 25 minutes 56.38 seconds, which stood in the name of KS Chauhan (Uttar Pradesh) set in 1995.

His second record came in the gruelling 20 km walk. Gurdial timed 1::51:03.00 to break the previous mark by more than one minute. AR Rajalingam of Andhra Pradesh set the earlier record of 1::52:15.75 in 1988.

Other medal winners for the Chandigarh team were Sada Ram got gold in the 800 and silver in 1,500-metre in the plus 45 group. Navjot Singh came third in the 20 kmwalk in plus 50 group.CP Verma bagged third position in 100-metre in plus 40 section.

Kiran Verma won silver in the 10 km walk in the plus 35 section and Bimla Saini got bronze in the 5 km walk in the plus 45 group.

More than 50 sportspersons including women represented Chandigarh in the National meet.
