CHANDIGARH, April 20: The Chandigarh Basketball Association (CBA) is conducting its state junior championship at the DAV Senior Secondary School courts in Sector 8 here from May 1 to 3. Giving this information here today CBA general secretary Ravinder Talwar said that the state meet has assumed greater significance as Chandigarh team would be selected to participate in the National Junior Basketball Championship to be held in Pondicherry next month.The association will also conduct coaching camp in collaboration with the Chandigarh Sports Department prior to participation in the Junior Nationals to be conducted by Pondicherry Basketball Association from May 21 to 27 at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium at Uppalam. Fifteen boys and 15 girls would be selected for the coaching camps. According to Talwar, who is also the vice-president of the Basketball Federation of India, the girls camp would be conducted at the Sector 7 Sports Complex while the boys camp would be organised at the Sector 46 Sports Complex.
Entries close with K S Bharti, honorary secretary CBA, at House No. 1355, Sector 28 B or Sector 7 Sports Complex on April 30. Boys and girls born on of after January 1, 1981 are eligible to take part in the Junior Nationals.
DAV School, Sector 7 are the defending champions in the boys section while SD Public School, Sector 32 are the runners-up. In the girls section, Sports Authority of India Sports Hostel in Sector 18 will defend their crown while YCC were the runners-up in the last edition.
Meanwhile, the Basketball Federation of India has decided to constitute a medical board on May 20 at the venue to examine the eligibility of the players. In this direction, BFI secretary general J P Misra has directed the affiliated units to report at the venue latest by morning of May 20 to avoid any inconvenience. No team will be entertained without proper medical examination by the BFI constituted medical board.
The BFI is also conducting the referees examinations for inclusion of BFI into Panel B. The performance report of the referees would be submitted to the chairman of the BFI Technical Committee G M Sampath.
Schools games
The first National School Games throwball championship for under-19 will be held at Mysore from May 24 to 27, according to Ravinder Talwar, vice president of the School Games Federation of India.
