Thundercatz `B' win tie-breaker

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, April 20: Thundercatz `B' walked past Kirkee Blues 3-2 via tie-breaker, while Range Hills Young Boys Sports Club ousted Poona Social Sports Club 3-0 to proceed into the second round of the late Anthony (Maharaj) Memorial football tournament in progress at the Military ground, Ghorpuri.

Thundercatz and Kirkee Blues were involved in a listless game of soccer, with the encounter failing to produce any result in regular duration. In a game of midfield exchanges the match saw a few opportunities for both the teams, but for one reason or the other they failed to materialise. Thundercatz efforts came from Sutap Nair and Zaheer Shaikh with Pinaki Ray too failing to capitalise on easy scoring chances.

For Kirkee Blues, Sagar Dongre, Vinod Mane and Farook Shaikh muffed up close range opportunities.

In an opportunistic attempt in the first-half, a free kick from top of the goal box by Thundercatz sailed directly into the goal which was rightly disallowed by referee Askokan Nambiar, the kick being an indirect one.

The second-half game pattern remained unchanged. After the final whistle the tie-breaker became inevitable.

Pinaki Ray, Grecil Badges and Rohit Bhute netted for Thundercatz while the losers managed two via Jannuddin Shaikh and Pappu Shinde.

Both teams received one yellow card each. Shahid Shaikh of Kirkee Blues warranted for handling the ball in the rival goal box while Pinaki Ray for rough play.

Range Hills Young Boys S C had to put up against some strong resistance from lesser fancied Poona Social though the final result is no indication of the same. The winners definitely got a run for their money. The first session produced a lone goal by Range Hills Young Boys. Midway during the first-half, in the 15th minute, they went into the lead. Gopi Shanmugam engineered a fine forward pass to Shabir Sayyed positioned in the clear. The resultant kick by Shabir beat the keeper, Mahesh Pillay, all hands down.

Returning for the post breather session, Range Hills defence survived some good moves from the rival's forward line.

In the 45th minute of play, Srikrishna Gaikwad increased the lead. Manohar Khude approaching menacingly with the ball dribbled past a host of players and passed on to the waiting Gaikwad. Gaikwad made no mistake in slamming home a powerful kick into the net.

With the rivals, Poona Social resigning to their fate the game tempo slackened. In the dying minutes the winners hammered in the final nail into the coffin. In the melee that ensued at the Poona Social's goal mouth Santosh Khude latched on to a loose ball and tapped in with his left foot.

The lone yellow card went to Sandeep Kadam for rough tackling.

Today's fixtures: 3.30 p.m: KP XI vs SRPF; 4.45 p.m: Rahul S C vs Youngsters.
