AHMEDABAD, April 22: Mystery shrouds the death of a 23-year-old youth who died nine days after he was administered an injection at the New Civil Hospital here on April 6.Rakesh Harsiddh Trivedi, a resident of Isanpur, battled with his life after the injection but failed to recover and breathed his last on April 15. Officials at the hospital said that a four-member team has been formed to probe into the matter. However, the post mortem report of the youth was yet to be submitted to the team, they said.
For Rakesh's parents, it is an irreparable loss. Family sources said that the youth was admitted to the hospital on April 5, when he complained of acute pain in the stomach. He was examined by doctors and was advised to undergo immediate surgery.
The doctors contacted the parents to seek permission for the operation and fixed April 6 for it. Before being taken to the operation theatre, sources said, Rakesh was administered an injection by a nurse.
Sources said that immediately after being given the injection, Rakesh complained of uneasiness and was taken to the intensive cardiac care unit, where he was kept on ventilation.
About the case, in-charge medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, M.M. Prabhakar said that there was no doctor present at the time of the incident and a nurse had administered him an injection before surgery. He said that it appeared that Rakesh developed an allergy to the injection and therefore he was rushed to the intensive care unit.
Sources said the doctor who was to operate Rakesh also examined him and put him on ventilator but his condition deteriorated and he died at 3 a.m. on April 15.
Prabhakar said that the injection might have affected the cardiac system but the inquiry report was yet to come. He said that details could be available with the in-charge of the inquiry team.
Sources, however, said that the post mortem of the deceased was conducted in the civil hospital and his viscera was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for examination. Reports are yet to be disclosed.
When contacted, Shahibaug police said that an FIR has been registered and Sub-Inspector Rathore was investigating.
