LUCKNOW, April 23: Dissidents in the BJP-led coalition government in Uttar Pradesh have launched a fresh campaign to oust Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, saying that BJP's popularity in the State was declining under his leadership. The rebels, who claim to have support of 59 MLAs and six MLCs, held a meeting here late last night and decided to go ahead with their campaign to seek Singh's removal.
Rajesh Pandey, spokesman for the rebel group, told PTI that the number of dissidents was rising and ``more legislators are waiting to come out openly against Kalyan Singh's style of functioning.''
Another round of rebel group's meeting is slated for April 27 at Kanpur after which the dissident MLAs may once again go to Delhi to renew their demand for a change of guard in Uttar Pradesh in the larger interests of the party,'' he said.
Dissident leader Surjeet Singh Dang said the rebels unanimously decided to go ahead with their campaign to seek Kalyan Singh's removal.
Holding Kalyan Singh responsible for theslide in BJP's popularity in the State, Dang said the CM was ``totally neglecting'' party workers.
``We are aware of the political crisis in the country and do not want to pressurise central leaders at this juncture. But it is imperative that quick action be taken to redeem the damage done to the party during the chief ministership of Kalyan Singh,'' he added.
The dissident leaders alleged that ``threatening phone calls'' were being made to their family members and ``false cases'' registered against them in a bid to ``intimidate those opposed to Kalyan Singh.''
