  • Football is touted as the most popular game in the world. And if YOU WANT TO keep abreast with its finer points then Laws Of The Game 1998 is the book to pick from the shelf.

The book gives the rules and regulations laid down by the International Football Association Board. All aspects of the game from the field of play to corner kicks have been considered. For the lay man's sake the book also has ample illustrations and elaborate diagrams, especially on offside and fouls -- The Marine Sports, 67 pages, Rs 50.

  • If you are looking for a textbook on martial arts, or for a referencer on physical fitness, Sensei Farokh Dinshaw's third book Bushi, The Warrior should appeal to you. Complete with a foreword by former Miss India Madhu Sapre, the book should serve a karateka taking a viva or a belt exam well.

There is little for the uninitiated, save for an interesting fact file on Bruce Lee, and heaps of general knowledge. Sensei Dinshaw's penchance for Oriental philosophy is evident in chapters on Zenphilosophy and Buddhist anecdotes. Bushi, incidentally, is an acronym derived from Buddhism and Shinto -- The Marine Sports, 122 pages, Rs 110.

  • Senior coach and official Ashok Lohar's passion for handball, considered among the fastest and most tiring sports in the business, is matched only by his passion for athletics.

His primer on handball is a comprehensive introduction to the rules and basic skills training, well supplemented by illustrations and photographs -- The Marine Sports, 62 pages, Rs 50.
