Tension in Chilka over prawn sources

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Puri, April 24: Tension prevailed inside the Chilka lake today after over 2,500 fishermen sailed into the lagoon in about 300 boats in their bid to demolish `gherries', areas with bamboo fencing reserved for prawn culture.Official reports said that the police had intervened and arrested fifty of the fishermen and seized three boats. The fishermen, agitated over the prawn gherries which they claimed was squeezing their area of operation, had earlier given an ultimatum to the government to take steps to demolish them. District collector P K Mohapatra and SP D Panigrahi had rushed to the lake after the incident. About 3,000 fishermen had held a meeting today at Barkul after which they entered the lake.
