APRIL 25: State Water Supply Secretary V Ranganathan has said Thane district is unlikely to become tanker-free by the year 2000 given the slow pace of work undertaken under the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP). He was addressing a meeting convened to review the progress made in ensuring water supply in the rural and urban areas of the district on Thursday.Konkan Divisional Revenue Secretary Sharvari Gokhale, Thane Collector Mukesh Khullar, TMC Commissioner T S Chandrashekhar, KDMC Commissioner G T Bandri, Thane ZP Chief Executive Officer Manisha Varma, MJP Executive Engineer Subhash Deshmane and chief officers of all municipal councils were present at the meeting.
``For years we have been unable to solve the problem in the tribal padas of Mokhada, Shahapur and Murbad talukas,'' Ranganathan said adding, ``In spite of repeated reminders from me nothing has been done about the water supply projects for Mokhada and Khardi.''
Comparing the work of the MJP officials in Thane with those in Sangli andSatara he said: ``There seems to be no jeevan (life) in the Jeevan Pradhikaran over here.'' He instructed them to follow prescribed guidelines strictly. ``Once the plan is sanctioned tenders should be invited in a week and by next week the contract should be finalised. After finding out whether the work has been done as specified the payment should be made promptly,'' he pointed out and added, ``under no circumstances should the time period for work completion be increased.'' On their part, MJP officials submitted that of the 13 talukas in the Ulhasnangar, Thane and Dahanu are tanker-free.
In the remaining 10 talukas 41 of the 107 villages and 47 of the 193 wadis have been made tanker-free.
