Gosikhurd dam oustees decry resettlement delay

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NAGPUR, APRIL 25: An action committee of Gosikhurd irrigation project-affected persons took out a `mashal morcha' to the dam site, Thursday, to protest the delay in rehabilitation of dam oustees.A section of the affected villagers from Jivanapur, Ghat-Umri, Thutanbori, Kharada, Gadeghat and Parsodi, carrying torches, marched to the dam site near Gosikhurd village in Bhandara district. Heavy police bandobast and repressive measures by police authorities failed to make any impact on the villagers, said a samiti release.

The police had blocked all roads leading to the dam site by erecting barricades. They also tried to mislead villagers even as the top officials including District Superintendent of Police Ramanand were camping in the area to foil the morcha, alleged the samiti leaders.

Addressing villagers who reached the dam site defying police bandobast, the samiti leaders criticised the government machinery for failure to work out a satisfactory rehabilitation package. The samiti is demanding that therehabilitation package should be worked out on priority to the satisfaction of the affected persons and the dam construction work should be suspended till then.

About 200 villages and over one lakh villagers will be affected directly or indirectly by the mega dam being constructed across Wainganga river. Alleging that the government machinery was indifferent to the plight of these persons, the committee launched an agitation.

Following a morcha to the dam site earlier this year, the government officials assured to take up rehabilitation work on priority. But contrary to assurances, no concrete steps were taken for rehabilitation of the displaced persons.
