CPM can wait to rule India: Nayanar

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 25: Chief Minister E K Nayanar has ruled out the possibility of his party colleague and West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu becoming the Prime Minister.

While briefing mediapersons on decisions of the Cabinet meeting here yesterday, Nayanar said that CPM would not join the Ministry even if a coalition Government was formed. He, however, said the chances of a Congress minority Government taking over at the Centre had now been reduced.``It is likely to be a coalition Government. It is not sure whether the Government will be led by Congress or some other party,'' he said, but added that his party was in favour of a Congress-led coalition Government.Replying to questions, Nayanar said: ``We communists are not for ruling India now. We are ready to wait. We have no illusion that socialism will come to India in two days time.''

Nayanar made it clear that CPM favoured a Congress-led Government, as Congress was the largest party in the Opposition. He also indicated that his partypolitburo was not likely to take any decision favouring the proposal of Jyoti Basu as Prime Minister. This proposal would need to be discussed at the Central committee which will meet on May 8 and 9.

When asked why an alternative government was not in shape even eight days after the Vajpayee Government lost the trust vote, he said, ``The democratic process will take its own time. Will not a woman take about 10 months to give birth to a child?''

Nayanar said that Mulayam Singh was reluctant to support Congress as he was apprehensive of his party's chances in Uttar Pradesh. ``Laloo Prasad has no such fears about Bihar. That is why he extended his support to Sonia readily. We (CPM) also have no such fears about Kerala,'' he added. He said that he would not be attending the party politburo meeting in Delhi tomorrow. ``I have already conveyed my views on the situation,'' he said.
