Jayasuriya granted divorce

AGENCIES
COLOMBO, APRIL 25: Star cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya won a divorce from his wife, Sumudhu Karunanayake, last week, well ahead of his departure to England with the Sri Lankan team for the World Cup.

Under the divorce settlement, Jayasuriya has agreed to pay four million rupees as permanent alimony to Sumudhu, a former AirLanka air hostess, and also allowed her to keep the Rs one million worth of jewellery he had given her at the time of their marriage, the weekend Sunday Times reported here today.

Jayasuriya, filed the divorce petition last December, barely six months after a fairy tale wedding in Colombo which was attended among others by Sri Lankan president, Chandrika Kumaratunga and other politicians.

The master batsman, who sought divorce on the grounds of `malicious desertion' also accused Sumudu of cruel behaviour and said the continuation of the marital relationship was detrimental to his cricketing career.Just as Jayasuriya's divorce was granted by a district court another top Sri Lankancricketer, Aravinda de Silva entered into wedlock with Sarita, a model from down town Colombo on April 18.

Woolmer dilemma

LONDON: South Africa's cricket coach Bob Woolmer appears to have ruled himself out of coaching the England team, for the time being at least.England, who are seeking a replacement for David Lloyd when he steps down as coach at the end of the World Cup on June 20, have already approached Englishman Woolmer.

However, a report in The Sunday Telegraph says ex-England Test all-rounder Woolmer has accepted an offer to commentate for Talk Radio, an English station, on England's tour of South Africa starting later this year.
