Farmers' body to observe May 1 as `Betrayal Day'

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NAGPUR, APRIL 27: Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti, an Yavatmal-based farmers' organisation, will observe the coming Maharashtra Day on May 1 as `Betrayal Day' to protest Sena-BJP coalition Government's alleged casual attitude to cotton growers' plight.

According to Janandolan Samiti, the farmers of the region would hold day-long dharna before the taluka and district headquarters in the region and highlights the saffron government's apathy towards their plight on that day.

The organisation pointed out that despite assurances from Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray and Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde that guarantee price of raw cotton would be hiked to Rs 2,500 per quintal from the existing rate of Rs 2,100, nothing has materialised yet. The Samiti also demanded a fresh loan for the region's farmers for the losses they suffered due to crop failure for the third consecutive year. This had also led to suicides by farmers of Vidarbha in the recent past.

The Samiti said the banks have refused togive a fresh loans to farmers as they could not repay the amount due to crop failure, money-lenders were taking the advantage. If farmers fail to get loans from banks, over 60 per cent land of the region would not be cultivated, it further said.

The organisation had highlighted the farmers' plight by a signature campaign last year and launching an indefinite Rasta Roko agitation when the winter session of the State Legislature was on at Nagpur. However, its Rasta Roko agitation flopped in the region as the organisation could not mobilise people for it.

The Janandolan Samiti has appealed to farmers to participate in the proposed agitation to be organised on May 1 and ensure its success.
