Constable Madhukar Punjaji Bhoi (35), had illicit relationship with Mangala Yadav Gaikwad (30) residing in Shivdi village. Bhoi used to visit her house as her husband was his friend. However, Bhoi developed a relationship with Mangala and continued to visit her in absence of Gaikwad. The affair turned sour later.

On June 25, 1998, Bhoi went to her house and there was a quarrel. Enraged, Bhoi poured kerosene on Mangala and set her ablaze in front of her two daughters. Additional sessions judge SM Shambole sentenced him to life imprisonment.
