Central Railway bag title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, April 27: Central Railway, runners-up in the championship last year, drubbed Central Revenue Sports Board `A' 3-1 to claim the victor's title in the men's team event of the Central Revenue Institutional Table Tennis championship which concluded at the Symbiosis Spa here recently.

In the women's section, the title went to Rashtriya Chemical Fertilisers (RCF) after they ousted Western Railway 3-1.

The winner's laurels in the men's events rested on the heroics of Bhushan Thakur who downed R Dass in a hard fought 19-21, 21-11, 21-13 and recent Chhatrapati awardee Rohit Chaudhary who eliminated Sanjeev Mehra 21-15, 19-21, 21-19.

The sole win for Central Revenue Sports Board `A' came via N Ravichandran who lost to Zubin Panthaki 21-16, 21-14. Bhushan Thakur, however, clinched the championship when he came back to win the reverse singles 21-19, 21-18 against Sanjeev Mehra.

In the women's section, it was Mamta Prabhu who restored parity for RCF after Depali Zaveri went down to Salmali Mahtre in a close scoring 26-24, 12-21, 14-21. Even though Mamta went down 17-21 in the first game to Western Railway's Sonia Deshpande, she quickly came back to clinch the next two at 21-13 and 21-18. In the reverse singles, Mamta once again outwitted Salmali 21-17, 21-10.

The RCF doubles duo of Mamta and Amruta joshi then went on to clinch the issue by defeating Salmali and Sonia 21-14, 22-20.

RCF's Mamta Prabhu and Central Railway's Rohit Chaudhary were later adjudged the best players of the tournament.

KV Vaidyanathan, Chief Commissioner of Customs and Excise was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.
