Doctor couple commit suicide by injecting anesthesia

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, APRIL 30: The decomposed bodies of Narendra Garg and his wife Meenu, both doctors at the GTB hospital, were found in their Senior Residents' Hostel room on Thursday evening. Preliminary investigations and the empty bottles of Norcuron injection found in the room seem to indicate that the two anaesthetists died of an anaesthetic overdose. The police suspect they injected themselves with Norcuron.

The bodies of the couple were discovered on their beds after doctors in neighbouring rooms complained of a severe stench emanating from the room. They are not sure when the couple committed suicide - on Monday or Tuesday, which was a holiday. Apparently, Garg's parents, who live in Adarsh Nagar, tried contacting their son on Monday and got no response.

The police also found a suicide note written by Meenu in the room.

According to the police, the suicide note indicates that there had been a slight tiff between the couple and that Narendra had gone to work despite his wife asking him not to do so. Inher note, Meenu, who was four months' pregnant, reportedly states that her husband did not respond to her pager message and accuses him of not caring for her enough.

Police officials feel Narendra might have discovered his wife's body and the suicide note and decided to kill himself too.

A senior resident and his wife, who were close to the two, said they were considered an ideal couple in the hospital. The two had recently cleared their post-graduation entrance in the first attempt.

An SDM inquiry has been ordered into the case and according to police officials, further investigation will follow only if the girl's parents suspect any foul play in the case.

Doctors in the Department of Anaesthesia at GTB say they had no idea Meenu was going to take such a step when she left hospital on Monday after a 12-hour gruelling shift at noon.

She reportedly returned to her two-room quarters in the Senior Residents' Hostel, where she had been staying with Narendra since their wedding. The police suspect thatsometime that day or later, she injected herself with the anaesthetic Norcuron, whose bottles were found in the room.

In her note, Meenu reportedly also asks her husband to persist in government service and not to go into private practice despite some harassment involved in getting his contract as consultant renewed. Narendra had signed a six-month contract as consultant after leaving his residency midway.

Some doctors in the hostel, however, feel that the work environment was the real issue in this case. "Though the suicide note mentions the lovelessness of their existence it was the work overload in the hospital that was responsible for her death or for creating the factors that led to her death," says a doctor.
