PATIALA, May 4: The Punjabi University, Patiala, today announced fresh dates for the examinations which were postponed due to the teachers' strike. The exams would be held along with regular exams. The rescheduling of the postponed exams has caused much resentment among the students, who feel they have been deprived of the crucial period for preparation of exams. Worst affected are the students of BA-III who will now have to appear for their final exams on May 13, 14 and 15. The of English (compulsory) exam has rescheduled for May 14. And again, with the rescheduling of the Punjabi exam on May 26, they would have to appear for exams on three consecutive days, May 25, 26 and 27.Controller of Examination P.S. Khaira said: ``We have no other option but to adjust these exams in between the ongoing exams. Any further postponement would result in wastage of time. We want the next academic session to begin on time, for which it is absolutely necessary that he exams are conducted without any further delay.''
Amiboj, a student of Modi college, says the students are being punished for no fault of theirs. ``There is no fun in having these exams in between. The university authorities should realise that for their own convenience they are playing with the career of thousand of students.''
Condemning the decision, Punjab Government College Teachers' Association (PGTCA) president Dr P.S. Bhatti said: ``It is just not fair that the students are asked to appear for exams on consecutive days. There should at least be a gap of one day in between. The university should try to relieve the students' hardships and should reschedule these readjusted exams after the regular exams are over.''
The B.Com. examinations finish on May 13, but the students of BA and BSc. classes are being affected due to this rescheduling of exams.Anirudh, a student of BA-II of Mohindra College, says that ``the rescheduling has disturbed whole of my study routine. This last minute rescheduling has once again exposed the incompetence of the university and its lack of consideration for the students.''
GCG student Dipika states: ``I was to appear for an entrance exam on May 26 and now with the university giving fresh dates for the postponed exam I have been deprived of the opportunity. The university authorities should have acted more sensibly and should have rescheduled the exams after the culmination of these exams.''
According to Dinesh Sharma, another student of Mohindra College, ``How does it matter if the results are declared a week later or the new session starts a bit late. The university is bothered about the next session but does not care the loss suffered by students due to teachers' strike. The students have already suffered a lot. Perhaps it is high time that the university stops playing with the career of thousands of students.''
